JUNE 2013 " HEART TO HEART WITH CINDY SCOTT "
Intimate Music Series Features Exciting Line-up of Guests

NEW ORLEANS, LA –Jazz singer Cindy Scott invites a varied group of acclaimed artists to join her in an intimate music series every Sunday evening through the month of June. The series kicks off on Sunday, June 1 at 7:00 p.m. with a live preview of her latest studio recording project, which begins recording the all new material the very next morning!

Scott will host the weekly music series every Sunday in June from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. at Café Istanbul. The shows will feature other musicians with whom Cindy shares a real connection, like her former teacher Leah Chase, guitarist and long-time collaborator Brian Seeger, and multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Don Vappie. In addition to popular New Orleans performers, Cindy has invited several acclaimed out-of-town artists to join her on the series, most notably pianist Randy Porter (Freddy Hubbard, Benny Golson, Gino Vannelli, Dianne Schuur) and Venezuelan Latin Jazz vocalist Maria Marquez. The full schedule with individual concert descriptions follows.

“I am always looking for more ways to connect and collaborate with artists I love musically AND personally. I want this series to reveal to the audience how musicians who are friends relate to each other,” says Scott. Wedged between the two sets of music will be an interview segment which could potentially allow questions from audience members. “I’m not sure exactly what will happen each week, except that the music will be amazing, and the connections will be honest and intimate. That’s why I named it “Heart 2 Heart.”

The relatively new venue, Café Istanbul, is one of several businesses inside of the New Orleans Healing Center located at 2372 St. Claude Avenue at the corner of St Roch Avenue. Café Istanbul was designed from its inception with performance art in mind. It has a state-of-the art sound system, beautiful acoustics, and there isn’t a bad seat in the house. There is ample free parking behind the center.

SERIES LINEUP

JUNE 2: “INNER WORKINGS” - Live Preview of New CD,  with Randy Porter (Portland, OR) on piano, Dan Loomis (Brooklyn, NY) on bass, and Jamison Ross (New Orleans, LA) on drums. Come sample the new material that will be on Cindy’s next CD due to be released in Fall 2013. You will hear lots of originals and standards reinterpreted. Although Cindy has played plenty with each of these players, this will be the very first time this quartet has ever worked all together. Dangerous? You betcha! Who doesn’t like a little danger?

JUNE 9: “JUST FRIENDS” - Cindy Scott with Leah Chase & Michael Pellera. Scott and Chase, who are dear friends, will share the stage, performing separately and together. Pianist Michael Pellera, long time collaborator with Leah and director of the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts Jazz Program, will join them. The goal is for the audience to have as much fun as the two women do together!

JUNE 16: “THE SCOTT - SEEGER DUO,” plus “NOW! HERE! THIS!” - The first set will showcase years of collaboration between guitarist Brian Seeger and Scott. Over the past six year these two have laughed and cried together, made an award-winning record together, toured together, and written music together, and it shows when they play together. The second set will be an exciting new project called Now! Here! This! that adds the loopy cellist/vocalist Helen Gillet to the mix. It’s zany, accessible and magical!

JUNE 23: “CANCIONES DE LA LUNA LLENA” – Songs of the Full Moon with Maria Marquez (San Francisco) & Jose-Miguel Yamal (Houston). Venezuelan jazz singer and syndicated world music DJ Maria Marquez met Cindy at a jazz workshop in 2004. The two hit it off and have remained friends. After a four year hiatus, Marquez called Cindy and said, “I NEED to come back to New Orleans. Can we put something together?” The two decided to invite Latin jazz pianist Jose-Miguel Marquez in from Houston to the party, so it’s sure to be, well, you know, muy caliente!

JUNE 30: “CREOLE CRUSH” – with Don Vappie and special surprise guest – can you guess who it is? Cindy and Don have worked together many times in various configurations, and the combination is always interesting and supportive. Since Don is such a good singer in additional to his multi-instrumental musical genius, the two like to find material to do together. This show also features a special surprise guest who, due to recording contract restriction, can’t be named at this time. Twenty questions…is it a man or a woman? Tall or short? You get the idea.

It’s December, 2012, and the past few months have been crazy! Here are a few highlights:

Generally: Been writing music with all kinds of people, lately. Hung out for a minute with Anders Osborne, wrote a song with Chip Wilson (well, we just need to finish it, but it’s close), wrote a Christmas tune with Chris Adkins that will be a huge hit one day, and Lynn Drury and I finished a song she had been working on that turned out really cool. John Rankin and I even wrote a darkly funny song about people who throw trash out of their car windows!

November: Check out the December edition of Offbeat Magazine. There’s a regular feature called “In the Kitchen with (insert some musician’s name), and this month features my Cream of Poblano Pepper Soup recipe. It’s sinfully delicious, and I promise it’s really easy to make. I even had to do a live cooking demonstration in the French Market! I did my best Julia Child impersonation.

October: Brian Seeger and I made a trip to Europe for several gigs organized by our friend Patrik Becker. We also played a beautiful concert in Paderborn thanks to help of the lovely Michael Sprenger. We’ve been invited back – see you folks October 31, 2013! Also, our tour took us to Istanbul, Turkey. If you haven’t been to Istanbul, you must. It’s just gorgeous!

September: Brian Seeger and I played at the Kemah Jazz Fest in Texas with Jose-Miguel Yamal on organ, and Vernon Daniels on drums. It was a great, if rainy, show. While we were out there, Brian and I did an amazing house concert and decided that we want to share ourselves in this way more and more often.

Not too long ago I was interviewed for a highlight series on WWOZ Radio called "This Is My New Orleans." Zach Young interviewed me and put up this four-minute edited piece. I think he did a great job getting me to talk candidly about my music and my New Orleans experience. What do you think? Here's the link.

Cindy will be performing at the Kemah Jazz Festival Sunday, September 30 with Brian Seeger on guitar, Jose-Miguel Yamal on organ and piano, and Vernon Daniels on drums. Here's a link to the poster.

Cindy is excited about her upcoming Europe Tour (October 2012). Annweiler am Trifels, Cologne, Paderborn, Istanbul! Yea, I know Turkey is not Europe, but it's the same trip for me. See the "Shows" tab for details!

Cindy is back in New Orleans after two beautiful tours. She performed several shows in Houston, New York, and Connecticut in May, and at venues all over Mexico (Mexico City. Queretaro and San Miguel de Allende) in June/July. Check out the SHOWS page on this website for details or for other upcoming performances.

Cindy had an amazing set at the 2012 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival in the WWOZ Jazz Tent from 12:30 – 1:20. She sang with a smoking organ trio featuring Brian Seeger on guitar, Joe Ashlar on Hammond B3 organ (AND he plays real pedals), and Jamison Ross on drums. Leah Chase and Shamarr Allen were her special guests. You can read the Times Picayune review here.

Cindy recently performed at the 11th Annual Almaty Jazz Festival in Almaty, Kazakhstan! She performed in a beautiful theater called the “Palace of Children” on Sunday, April 15 with guitarist Brian Seeger.

Cindy recently had the opportunity to coach Oscar Winner Octavia Spencer and actor/comedian Russell Brand for their singing in an upcoming Diablo Cody movie being filmed in New Orleans. She even took Spencer into the studio to record her track for the movie!

In November, Cindy had an amazing experience playing in some of the best jazz clubs of EUROPE (Luxembourg, Germany and Switzerland) with Brian Seeger’s Organic Trio (Brian Seeger on guitar, Jean-Yves Jung on piano and organ, and Paul Wiltgen on drums.) Shell be going back in October/November 2012!

The September 2011 edition of Downbeat Magazine featured an article on Cindy, her music, and her experiences living in New Orleans. Click here to read the unedited version written by Jennifer Odell.

LET THE DEVIL TAKE TOMORROW WON the "Best of the Beat" Award for Best Contemporary Jazz CD of 2010. Cindy was also nominated for “Best Contemporary Jazz Artist.”
